New Backgammon Variation - Sabotage Backgammon

My daughter and I made this up tonight in 30 seconds. In my opinion, it's brilliant. We had so much fun!

We call it "Sabogammon", short for Sabotage Backgammon. I wanted to call it Sharinggammon, but was outvoted.

RULES:
At each roll, the opposing player moves your first pip for you (the sabotage), choosing either die. You then use your second die, the die they didn't choose, to minimize the damage.

On doubles, the opposing player moves your first two pips, and you get to move the last two. This rule I'm not sure of - let me know if you think of something better.

That's it. Simple, effective, and oh my, we played one game, and the level of engagement and thinking was 3x a regular game.

And bearing off was a riot!

Try it out, and let me know what you think of SABOGAMMON!

That’s a great idea! For the doubles, maybe just alternate between making the moves (opponent makes moves 1 and 3)

Alternating could work. I'll try it. It depends on the level of Sabo one wants maybe!

Let me know when you've tried it. I'm really interested.

Game #2

We played our second game today. Again, the mental engagement was intense.

Reflections:
1) We had far more blots on the bar this game, and on many of them, there was only one option off, so that made that roll fairly simple to execute.
2) Some blots couldn't get off the bar. Same rule applies. turn lost.
3) Some strategy developed. Sabotaging the home board became a focus. Far different strategy for leaving pips behind at times, passing, running, etc.
4) There are no turns off. You don't get to relax for hardly a second.

Try both. So far we've been doing 2 and 2.

...

Tried it. It was a bit confusing, sometimes hard to keep track of who was moving what, and ended up with crashed home boards very early.

Will give it another go.
