Backgammon, Nackgammon, and Future Acey-Deucey? Tournaments:

I vote for a secondary rule, which would force completion of tournament rounds. This is something I've seen used at chess tournaments. In this scenario, once a round reaches
say, 95% completion, all moves remaining would have 1 day to be made or players would lose by forfeit, instead of 3. This would force those who stretch the time limits to the fullest to make their moves in a more timely manner.

I disagree. These tournaments are for fun, and I think it would spoil it for those who can't always get on daily. There isn't really any reason why it is important for games to finish a few days earlier at the expense of those players who don't play quite as fast as others.

Tournament completions:

If not a secondary set of rules to speed tournaments up from 3 to 1 day(s) per move, how about speed tourneys with 1 day per move for those of us who like to play faster games.

Second Secondary Set of Rules

I agree with changeisgood59 - 1 day tournaments would be great. The current tournaments drag on for months, mainly due to players who make 1 move per day or even 1 move every 2/3 days. There are only a very few players who play at that pace but the rest of us have to wait for them!

A separate "speed" tournament would be great! That is, as long as week ends were excluded. That is, make a move on Friday, and then resume on Monday.

I'm in!!!

The tricky parts are that we are an international community so 1) we can be separated by 8 or more hours; 2) holidays vary; and 3) work weeks vary. Additionally, there are simply times when we can't get to a computer because of our jobs, families, unexpected power outages, and individual computer problems. For these reasons, we also don't do 1-day turn times. Suppose you can only make your moves once a day, let's say when you're on your lunch break at 12:00pm. If you're in an 11:00am meeting that runs late and you don't get back to your desk until 12:20pm, you will have timed out, unless automatic postponement is activated because you've not used it in the recent past. But then 3 months later, the same thing happens again, now your game just time out.

We are open to other possibilities that allow us to balance the time/cost to implement with the expected usefulness to the user.

I love the idea of a "Speed Tournament" just as long as it runs along side the current tournaments and doesn't replace them, there's room for both. But as Zoo Escape Staff said, may be hard to cover time zones.

My favorite suggestion

I like taking every opportunity to promote real time games and this tournament thread does that . With RTP gaming in place a player could have the opportunity to ask another if they would like to complete the current game in RTP mode where a game can be completed quickly. There's no page changing delays since the board remains visible to both players throughout. When a move has been made, the next roll comes up and play continues. Personally I would prefer a click to roll feature because then I can feel like I'm actually throwing the dice. An RTP option can give a player with limited time or access the opportunity to finish a game that has been moving slowly. (for whatever reason) Programming would have to allow for entry into RTP mode at any stage of the game.
