RULES AND FORMAT FOR #4!!! Many thanks to abriscoe for the detailed format for #3. My main change is the playoff round. Top 4 get a bye in round 1, so top 12 will make playoffs. Also, there will be a one game playoff for any ties that push players out of the play off round (eg. a tie for position 12 and 13). More details below. Also, consensus is to have everyone play everyone. With that in mind, any games not finished by Nov 11 are eliminated from the round robin. If you don't think you can do it (it's not hard), bow out. Or, win enough games so that it won't matter! ______________________________________ ZOOESCAPE CHAMPIONS TOURNAMENT #4 1. Phase 1 is the Round Robin where everyone plays everyone using the doubling cube to 5 points. Resignations or Eliminations will have all of their results removed. Notes on Cube use: A regular victory is worth 1 point, a gammon is 2 points, and a backgammon is 3 points. Then you multiply that by whatever the cube is. 1, 2, 4 etc. If someone doubles you on the cube to 2 and you accept it, then you end up being backgammoned, you lose by 6 points and the match is over. The lesson is knowing when to cut your losses and when to take a chance. Let’s say you are ahead and have a chance to gammon someone, don’t offer the cube as they will decline and you will only win by 1 point when you might have won by 2. Crawford Rule and Dead Cube Rule in place. Crawford Rule will apply for the first game in a match that is played after one player reaches a score one short of the goal. That is once a player reaches 4 in a round robin or 8 in a semi etc. The Crawford rule only applies for that one game (The Crawford Game) in any match. Remove the cube from the Crawford Game to avoid confusion and reinstate the cube for following games should the trailing player win the Crawford Game. Dead Cube: If a player can win the match with a regular win with the current cube setting in the current game this player may not use the cube. The trailing player may use it providing they can not win the match on the current cube setting and they are not playing the Crawford Game. If you have started a game with a cube when there shouldn't be one, and one player does not want to start over, agree collegiately to continue the game without the cube being offered. This will keep the spirit of friendly competition alive. 2. Each completed match scores one point for the win, zero for the loss, regardless of games scores within the match. Top 4 will qualify for a bye in round one of the knockout round. The next eight will proceed to play in round 1 of the playoff round, which will be a first to 7 round. Ties to make the top four, and ties in position to make the top 12 will be handled in order by: A. Head to head results. B. If more than two are tied then it will go to points differential in the related (between the tied people) games. This will factor in the cube and margin of victory in the related games. C. The third tie breaker will be the ZE backgammon rating of the tied people as of the day the tournament starts. In case there are ties to make the top 12 (eg. A tie for position 12, with the players taking the 12th and 13th spots), these will be decided by a one game playoff. Round 2 of playoff: first to 7 Round 3 of playoff: first to 9 Championship Round: first to 11 3. There will be a time limit to finish all of the round robin games. The consensus in opinion seems to be 2 months, which will make the final day November 11 2013. ANY GAMES NOT COMPLETED BY THIS DAY WILL BE ELIMINATED FROM THE STANDINGS. **Some exceptions may be made on a game by game basis, depending on how close the game is to being finished**. A warning will be placed here and on the forum board confirming this or any changes. At the proposed time limit we will look at who has completed the fewest games. That player and all their matches will be removed from the table. We will then take a look at the new table and do the same for the next player with the greatest number of incomplete games. At some stage all remaining matches will appear as complete. The object of this rule is not to overly penalize players who take a little longer than others to complete their games but to remove players that are excessively slower and their play speed is unfairly holding up the greater majority. One of the goals of these unofficial tournaments was to avoid having tournaments that take 6 months to complete as in the official tournaments at ZooEscape. 4. As far as qualifications to play in the tournament, I am asking for one of 3 things: A. Past ladder champion that shows up in the bio or as in one case we just saw where I think 2 people vouched for someone’s past success. B. #1, 2, or 3 in any ZE tournament as evidenced in the bio. C. A backgammon personal best rating of 1825 or higher. Remember the main goal of these tournaments run by volunteers is to enhance the playing experience of ZooEscape Backgammon players by creating a variety of new tournaments that are designed to be fun and easy to play. These tournaments are not the place for rude comments and unsportsmanlike behaviours. Tolerance and acceptance that people will make mistakes is expected. Comments may not sound as polite as intended due to different cultures and languages being involved. If in doubt assume the best of your opponent. NOTE: If you believe someone’s comments or actions have been excessively inappropriate the policy for this tournament is to report it to the Tournament Host lilwarrior by way of a private message. lilwarrior will then make a call as to the action taken. This may be anything from a private warning to expulsion from the tournament. Please do not enter into a verbal argument with your opponent as this may escalate the problem and also lead to you violating the conduct code and affect your participation as well. Remember we all just want to enjoy playing Backgammon against friendly positive opponents . Let the games begin! |
