@final

I just found out that on a BG World Championship level, tournaments often end with a draw and therefore, various elimination rules have been invented, such as double, triple and quadruple elimination. It is just a suggestion for a balanced tournament design: http://www.tournamentdesign.org
At the forthcoming 42nd Backgammon World Championship in Monte Carlo, apparently the most prestigious BG tournament, http://www.bwcmc.com, they play under a double elimination format. AND REGISTRATION IS OPEN .......

Rules

General:
The tournament of nations is a friendly competition amongst members of zooescape to promote camaraderie with fellow countrymen and friendship with members of foreign lands.

Format:
A team shall consist of three or four players.
The 16 teams of Nations Tournament 4 will be divided by lot into four groups.
Competition will see each team play the other teams in its own group once. A team v. team match shall consist of each of the three or four members of a "home" team challenging each of the three or four members of the "visiting" team to a 3-day backgammon game.

The final round shall consist of a head-to-head competition amongst the four group winners and the four runner-ups.

Recording victories:
When a game between individual players is completed, the victor will announce his victory in the NT5 - results thread. The host will keep track of scores in each nation v. nation match and post these in the same thread. The host will post the standings after each match day is completed.

Points awarded:
A team shall receive two points for a victory, one point for a draw.
The standings shall show a team's victories and points
E.g.
1. Team A 5-4 2 points
2. Team B 4-5 0 points

Tie-breakers:
The group winners shall be the team with the most points. Should two or more teams end up even on points within a group, the tie-breakers, in order, are:
1. Victory percentage
2. Head-to-head competition between the two teams
3. A one-game playoff

Substitutions:
Should a team's player withdraw from further competition or leave on holiday (vacation) for more than one week, he should decline the games in any match and inform his team's captain of his decision.
In that case,
* a 4-man team may continue to play as a 3-man team or attempt to recruit a new member within three days
* a 3-man team shall attempt to recruit a new member within three days. Should that attempt fail, the third member's games shall be deemed as forfeited.

A substitute may not be recruited from another team unless that team has already been eliminated from further competition.

Rules

Draws
Should any knockout game (including the final) end in a draw, last year's rules apply:
Each team picks one player and we have a one-on-one deciding game.

Should the same team play another draw in the knockout stage, they must nominate a different player the second time around.

@ yiannakos

Congratulation to yiannakos to be be a super great host.
The rules are clear like said yiannakos.
So we play by the rules, keep your sugeestions for after the tournament.
We can make a poll and vote about it, like we did in the past.

According to me the final decision belong to the host.
It is not easy for yiannakos to read all your suggestions and have to tell you we stick to rules because it is the rules of this tourney.

The rules are simple, we need a playoff to have a winner. !! each team picks a player and either one game or 2 of 3.

Rules Schmools

Just kidding. Thank you all for sticking to predetermined rules. In the end, it eliminates conflict and difficulty when we do.

Perhaps we could draw a list of proposals to vote on for the next tournament.
