just a thought on the format--

not to casue any controversy but ONE THING that this site has lacked is the proper use of the CUBE---

I play in a weekly T (live) and it is matches to 9 or 11- to advance and the cube is very much part of the strategy-

a match of best of 3 games does not even bring the cube into play (again)-- it would be very much like the format for the T's here -

jsut a thought- I like the CUBE-- and dont get really a opportunity to factor that in on the ladder either--it is like ALWAYS GAMMON GO..

any other thoughts ?? again jsut an idea from the peanut gallery. lol

The cube

Yes - I too am a supporter of using the cube.

The Cube

I'm a fan of the cube too, not that I always use it at the right times but a tournament where each match was the first to 5 with the cube enabled. Maybe these sort of additions could be included once we give the first tournament a go to iron out any problems. I would like forced turns to be compulsory too as these tournaments would be more enjoyable when they move along at a quick pace.

clarifications

My understanding of the next few steps is as follows:

Blohkin2 will be posting the names of the paired players asap after the deadline of 1pm EST Sunday May 12.
Which I believe is Eastern Standard Time, a USA creation, and 5PM in Universal/Greenwich Mean Time, and 1 AM Monday at my house   ).

Then the paired players are responsible for challenging each other to three games.
Does it matter who makes the challenge? We will have to have 'openings', as in not be at our limit of games. We do not use the doubling cube, and it is the standard backgammon format only, AFAIK. I suppose we should set time limit at two days.

Then in a very short number of days (two?) or even hours (48?) we post the results of the three games, and the next round should be verified by Blohkin2.

How is it decided who plays each other in the second round?

Please correct any mis-assumptions. I am just trying to think through the process. I do hope everyone is aware that time zone differences will impact the speed of the games. I am online a lot, and have finished some games in an hour or two, but it is rare.

While I was writing...

three other messages popped up.

So, yes, I think forced moves should be enabled. I think (I hope!) mine already are, as I'm not sure I remember where to find that option.

Using the cube is a great idea, but I can see the wisdom of keeping it for the second tournament and later.

Tawnya's assumptions are correct.
I'll post the pairings after 1PM Eastern Standard Time today.
Paired players are responsible for challenging each other - I don't think the order matters here.
I agree - let's not use the doubling cube just yet - we can get back to it later
After all the results of round 1 are in I'm going to ask all the winners to confirm their participation in round 2 along with their then-current rating. This new rating will be used to pair the players the same way it happened in round 2.
As for enabling forced moves you can go to Settings - My Preferences - Backgammon Forced Turns and check the appropriate box there.

Also important - this is a friendly tournament, please let's be kind to each other

We already have 15 players who registered, if we don't have a player #16 I propose to randomly select a player from the first 8 registrants and this player would automatically go into the next round. But hopefully someone one else would register as the last player for this upcoming tournament.

Another thing - if the winner does not confirm his/her participation in the next round, the spot would be given to the player who lost in their match.

Did anyone ask Steelerhead? Not sure who's in, or been invited.... and is there a time to finish in?
