Each team will draw a letter from A to D to see which group they will be placed in:

I don't think they are random as I don't remember that I have seen same country's 2 team in one group..
It is highly unlikely that they always end up in different groups...like this tounrey, USA has 4 teams and all in different groups so IMO it must not be random

I think you gentlemen are being a little harsh.

Let's say that the 4 USA teams were allocated first, rather than last. The chance of them being in 4 different teams is about 8% (16/16 * 12/15 * 6/14 * 3/13).

This is almost the same chance of you rolling a d4, d5 or d6 to clear your last four pieces (from your 4 point) when your opponent has one piece left on their one point.

If that happened, you might say "that was lucky", but not "that wasn't random".
