You can't force somebody to accept a double at any point. Even after the Crawford if I want to pass a cube I lose a point. If the opponent opens with 31 and I roll poorly I may want to take my chances at 4-4 and 50% again rather than play on with the cube at 2 and in a weak position. In match play at these scores you will often see the trailing player wait a few moves until the opponent's position improves before turning the cube, when you might expect it straight away. The real issue here is that you should not be able to double before the first move has been made, which is a rule of backgammon. |

Guthers, you are correct that... ...you cannot force a player to accept a double. A player always has the option to either accept or decline the cube. The ZE website is set up to allow doubling before the 1st move is made. That is the way all of the CTs have been played, including CT 5. If the "Free Drop" rule is put to a vote, I may vote for it if I clearly understand how it will be implemented in future CTs. Until then, I support sticking to the rules as stated by the hosts. That is the precedent we have followed to decide which rules would be used and how they would be enforced in CTs 1-5. It requires patience, and the votes haven't always gone the way I would have liked, but this approach let's the majority rule which I support. Cheers! |

Sorry I misunderstood, however I think there is still some confusion here - the idea of the free drop is a separate question, as you can still drop the cube even if it is offered before the first roll. From what you and chwaqasahmed posted I thought you were saying the leading player shouldn't have the choice of whether to accept or drop in this circumstance. This is never the case. You do not have to accept a double at any time, it just costs you the point(s) to drop. The reason it is called 'free' at scores of 4-1, 4-3 or any score in longer matches where the trailing player needs an even number to win the match is that you effectively don't give anything away, as the trailing player still needs to win the same number of games to win the match. You do of course lose the option of free drop in the next game. So what I suggest we vote on is this, that in any cube game the person who gets first roll must roll the dice, and not double. Then the cube comes into play and will be available on the very next roll for the opponent. This would apply in all games, not just after Crawford games. Or, Stelrad put it much more succinctly a few posts back, abstain from doubling until the second roll. This would bring us into line with the rules of backgammon. |

Agreed... ...I suggest that the host(s) of CT6 put both issues to a vote. I am likely to vote yes on both. thx! |

I agree Lets put this matter for voting and it can be implemented in future Tourneys If any1 faces this issue in T5 they can request their opponent to not include that game if opponent agrees its ok if he/she does not it will b OK As free drop was not pre decided rule Anyhow we have very less time n games for T5 so its very highly unlikely that it will happen |

Vote - we don't have to do that in my opinion . I don't see where a vote would be required just write into the rules. I can make those adjustments since I polished all the rules when I took the cohost position for T5. Then forward to Kkid publish on the website I can send out announcement to every player as I have been doing during T5 tournament and reminder for future play |

Website!! Hi all While I am happy to carry on updating the website with tourney results I am going to ask the following: The initial format page can be sent to me as a word/publisher document and I will take as many snapshots of it as I need to get in on the site. I ask that all other results, tables etc are given to me as a jpeg image that I can drop straight into the website. Bonne Chance has done this perfectly well and made it very easy to update the results. I don't care how you present your results as long as those that require regular updates are a single jpeg. The Nations Tourney has not been as easy to update. Kid |
