tournament points

Should a gammon or backgammon be awarded extra tournament points?

admin?

Just a suggestion meant with this post to make the tournament league points 1 for a win, 2 for a gammon, 3 for a backgammon. What do you think?

I was thinking that too especially after I backgammoned poor pokhra...but I was gammoned first...then beaten again...so really, poor me...

I would say no

The reason I say no is that by having more points for a gammon or a backgammon, what are you rewarding or punishing? These can occur in three ways. Excellent play by the winner, poor play by the loser or by luck of the dice. So what is being penalised or rewarded here?

sorry - I sounded like a counsellor in the first post I'd added

I'd be happy if a person gammoned me and got extra points! Good on them I reckon...especially good if they played well. Even if I got crappy dice that's just the nature of the game.

In the normal games a gammon or backgammon gets extra points - why not in the tourny?

I realize that if you gammon or backgammon in a tournament game it is still reflected on the ranking...rating...but wouldn't a bonus in the tournament would make it more competitive?

What do you or others think?

punishment or penalized

I wanted to add that manutius raised an interesting thought with use of the words 'punishment' and 'penalized'.

At the moment if we lose a game we lose points...and while a gammon or backgammon gains or loses more points a bonus in a tournament for the winner shouldn't mean a bonus 'loss' for the nonwinner

Re: tournament points

We appreciate the discussion and differing perspectives!

We did consider whether or not to award points for gammons and backgammons in tourneys. We decided not to do so in an attempt to 'level' the playing field (every group should have a top-rated player and a bottom-rated player and players have no control over who they are playing). What further complicates the issue is whether we should take into account the player ratings (for example, whether a backgammon by a top-rated player against a bottom-rated player should it be the awarded the same as one against a middle/high-rated player). So we decided not to complicate things too much and keep it simple.
