I like the idea of breaking the first round up into smaller groups for all the reasons mentioned.
But what is the right number per group? I think it would be worth trying just doubling to 4 groups of 8 to see what happens.

Top 4 winners from each group in round 1 gives you 16 in round 2, so the next round could be 2 groups of 8 again, then the top 4 again from each group to round 3 with 8 total, etc...

I like lilwarrior's idea of first to 2 games per round, but I want to be sensitive to the amount of work it takes leoton to keep up with all of that. It could work if he doesn't need to care about the individual game detail, just the winner of the round.

P.S. Thank you leoton for BBL and considering improvement.

Time limit

Set a time limit for all games. Maybe 2 days for first round and 3 days for the finals. Ty

Players need to report a slow poke and after the time limit, admin declares a winner?

Ban the pokes for the next bbl tournament too.

BBL-17 Registration Link

Friends,

Since we haven’t completed BBL-16 quite yet, I have to wait to update the website with the BBL-17 registration form.

At the same time, I don’t want to break our established schedule and would ask you to register for BBL-17 at the direct link for the time being:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdOBWhB81bs2FYK0-_1k3bSVZIDdEqjqyFoeP_nTk4RhYsf2A/viewform

Remember, we are making a change to the group schedule by moving to the 4 group format with two group winners making the playoffs. I will update the Rules page as soon as BBL-16 is over.

Best,
Leoton

BBL-17 is now OPEN. Please start your group games now.

Friends,

I wanted to welcome two new and 34 returning players to our BBL-17 tournament!

Based on the snapshot of participants’ ratings as of March 26, the new FOUR group seeding has been completed and all games can now begin! Each group has nine players, so each of you will play 8 games on the group stage. The top 2 players from each group will go to the quarterfinals, where we use our usual format of best of three matches (1 BG, 1 NG, and 1 AD game).

As always, I would like to reiterate that this is a blitz league and when you signed up, you agreed to play fast, abide by the rules and code of conduct, and timely report individual results on our BBL website.

IMPORTANT: Please update your challenge criteria to ensure you can be challenged by your group opponents OR make sure you challenge them yourself first! All of your group games must be started by April 1!

In order to see who your group opponents are, please go to the home page of the BBL website (https://tinyurl.com/ze-bbl - bookmark this page!) where you will find the link to the Results page. Everything is set up on that page, including a ZE challenge link for each group opponent, created for your convenience. Click that link for each of your group opponents and your BBL-17 challenge will automatically open on ZE.

The home page of the BBL website also has the result submission form which the winner of each individual game should fill in upon completion of the game in the following format:
Player A - Player B 1:0, Gammon (if applicable). Remember to submit your results within 24 hours of completion to avoid any delays.

I intend to update the results multiple times a day as I get automated notifications on your result submissions. Please review the results page often, and, if you are not seeing some of your results, please don’t hesitate to submit them even if you lost a game. Your assistance here is greatly appreciated.

A few additional suggestions to speed up the games:
a) Communicate with your opponents to see what time of the day is best for both of you to be online.
b) If you happen to be on the losing side and your game is out of reach, consider resigning and updating the website with the result yourself as your opponent might not notice that the game was over.

As usual, feel free to connect with me directly if you have any issues, questions, or concerns

Best,
Leoton
